St. Mary's Church is the second largest hall church in Thuringia besides the Erfurt Cathedral and has always played an important role in the history of Mühlhausen's culture and urban development. Since 1975 the church has been utilised as a museum and is nowadays devoted to the life and work of the preacher and reformer Thomas Müntzer, who proclaimed his ideas in the imperial city of Mühlhausen in 1524/25. The memorial comprises about 100 m² of exhibition space and for example explains Müntzer’s tense relationship with Martin Luther and provides information on the survival of Müntzer in the culture of remembrance, especially in GDR times. In addition, a permanent exhibition informs about the building history of the church with the highest steeple in Thuringia as well as its historical stonemasonry.
