As early as around 1220, the Mühlhausen Law Book – one of the oldest legal texts in the German language – documented the presence of Jewish residents in the imperial city of Mühlhausen. A synagogue is mentioned in written records dating from around 1380. The building that can be visited today was constructed from 1840 onwards, was desecrated on 9 November 1938 and handed over to the Jewish Regional Community of Thuringia after 1945. Efforts to preserve it were crowned with success in November 1998 with its rededication. The synagogue and community centre are available for religious services.
A special guided tour organised by Mühlhausen Tourist Information on 6 September 2026 will explore the Jewish history of the town of Mühlhausen. The meeting point is at 2.00 pm in front of the Tourist Information office at Ratsstraße 20. Advance booking for the tour is required by calling 03601 40 47 70. The Tourist Information team would also appreciate it if you could purchase your ticket in advance. The participation fee is €10.00.
