The Mühlhäuser Rechtsbuch, one of the oldest legal texts in the German language, documented Jewish residents in the imperial city of Mühlhausen as early as 1220. A synagogue is mentioned in writing around 1380. The building that can be visited today was built in 1840, desecrated on 9 November 1938 and handed over to the Jewish Community of Thuringia after 1945. Efforts to preserve it were crowned with success in November 1998 with its rededication. The synagogue and community centre can be used for religious services.
The Jewish history of the city of Mühlhausen is the subject of a special guided tour offered by the Mühlhausen Tourist Information Office on 11 September 2025. The meeting point is at 2 p.m. in front of the Tourist Information Office at Ratsstraße 20. Advance registration for the tour is required by calling 03601 40 47 70. The Tourist Information team would also appreciate it if you purchase your ticket in advance. The participation fee is €10.00.
