Compared to the centuries-old history of the town of Mühlhausen, four decades of the GDR seem like the blink of an eye. And yet these 40 years have left a deep mark on the townscape, the architecture and, above all, people’s lives. Although the political transition took place almost as long ago as the GDR itself existed, traces of that era are still visible in the townscape today – you just need to know exactly where to look.
Under the motto ‘How it really was back then’, a special guided tour invites you to immerse yourself in everyday life and the architectural legacy of the GDR era. The tour sets out on an authentic search for traces beyond the clichés and explores which relics have survived to this day.
The tour, which lasts around 90 minutes, has been deliberately designed to be accessible, so that participants using wheelchairs or walking frames can also take part in this journey through time without any difficulty. The meeting point for anyone interested in history and keen to reminisce is the entrance to the Thomas-Müntzer-Schule.
