1. History you can touch: On the city walls

A must for families is a walk along the historic fortifications (access via the Inner Frauentor). Under the motto ‘Auf der Mauer, auf der Lauer’ (On the wall, on the lookout), history becomes tangible. The climb up the Rabenturm is rewarded with a panoramic view over the old town.

2. A musical interlude: organ devotions at Bach’s church

In the Bachkirche Divi Blasii, visitors will find tranquillity and superb acoustics. A highlight is a short organ devotional service every Wednesday at 12:00 (from Whitsun to Harvest Festival).

3. City tour: Mühlhausen in a nutshell

Anyone wishing to discover the secrets of this medieval imperial city can join a public guided tour. The 90-minute tour takes you through the charming alleyways, past the town’s most important sights. Every Monday, Wednesday, Saturday, Sunday and on public holidays, a public Old Town tour starts at 11.00 am from the Tourist Information Centre (Ratsstraße 20).
 

4. Out and about in the countryside: Giant sequoias & cycle routes

Mühlhausen’s municipal forest attracts visitors with its exotic botanical specimens: the majestic giant sequoias. Whether hiking through the municipal forest and the Hainich National Park or cycling along the Unstrut Cycle Route or the Unstrut-Werra Cycle Route, nature lovers will be in their element here.

5. A culinary institution: The 1st German Bratwurst Museum

A highlight for the whole family is a visit to the 1st German Bratwurst Museum on the outskirts of Mühlhausen. Here, everything revolves around this Thuringian cultural treasure – presented with a touch of humour, in an interactive way and, of course, with grilled bratwurst. The varied grounds, featuring a playground, animal enclosures, a herb and spice garden and much more, invite you to linger.

Mühlhausen combines tradition with modernity: with the AR tours, families can explore the town digitally. Historical scenes are projected directly into the here and now via a smartphone. This allows visitors to encounter virtual eyewitnesses or see long-gone buildings come back to life – an exciting adventure for children and teenagers.
