Guided tour for the birthday of St. Mary's on 09.02.2023

On the occasion of the birthday of St. Mary's, the Mühlhausen museums invite you on an exciting discovery tour through the city's "grande dame" on 9 February 2023. Even 802 years after it was first mentioned, the impressive St. Mary's Church still dominates the silhouette of the medieval imperial city.

Today's building dates from the 14th and 15th centuries and was already the second largest of its kind in Thuringia. What it has to do with the Teutonic Order or the famous sculptor and Prague cathedral builder Peter Parler is the subject of a guided tour on the building history of the important church. The focus will also be on the picture programmes of Gothic and modern stained glass, with which, for example, the sons of the famous bridge builder Johann August Röbling, who came from Mühlhausen, are associated. The council chair, three petrified partridges and an ancient library will also be discussed. Instead, otherwise inaccessible places are explored, allowing an exclusive perspective on the sacred building and its furnishings.

After the tour, visitors can enjoy a delicious mulled wine in front of the church.

The town's period of prosperity was in the Middle Ages and its stony witnesses still exist today. When exploring Mühlhausen, you can discover numerous Gothic churches, monuments, domestic architecture and half-timbered buildings as well as former mill sites. The entire historic town entre impresses and inspires at the same time.
