State ornithological station in Seebach

Seebach, first mentioned in 859, is a district of the town of Mühlhausen. The village lies between the Unstrut river and the Hainich National Park and is only 5 km away from Mühlhausen. This provides numerous opportunities for excursions to the historic old town of Mühlhausen and the Hainich National Park. The oldest German bird sanctuary - the Seebach State Ornithological Institute, which is also a branch of the Thuringian State Institute for Environment and Geology - is of supra-regional importance and is located in the moated castle built around 1200. The bird sanctuary and the castle are open to visitors. However, construction work in the castle continues. We ask all visitors to exercise increased caution and mutual consideration. Access to the castle is therefore restricted to the first floor and the owl exhibition in the basement. Please also observe the signs at the entrances.
