A night tour through the historic and winding streets of Mühlhausen is an experience of a special kind. In an atmosphere of past centuries, the night guide gives an insight into the eventful history of the medieval imperial city of Mühlhausen. You will learn a lot of interesting facts. Registration for the tour is required in advance at the Tourist Information, Tel. 03601 404770. Here one receives also the coupons for the participation in the value of 10,00 € per person. Please note that it is not possible to visit the interior of the museum during the night tour. The duration of the tour is about 90 minutes. The meeting point is in front of the Tourist Information in Ratsstraße 20.

The core of the town hall was built around 1300, with Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque extensions creating a unique ensemble of buildings in the middle of the old town. Particularly worth seeing are the hall, the Great Council Chamber with Gothic paintings and the Imperial City Archive (1614), which found its place on the mezzanine floor of the south wing from 1615 and can be accessed from the Town Hall Hall. The interior of the historical archive rooms is particularly impressive. It was made between 1615 and 1648 and has been preserved in its original form. The cabinets and chests still store the files and town books from the imperial town period of Mühlhausen. Windows and doors show Renaissance paintings with plants, heads, angels and animals. The Latin and Greek inscriptions on the cabinets and walls refer to the relationship of the citizens to the state, to the archive and the archival activity. With the letters of the alphabet and the astronomical signs Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Star, Venus and Saturn the files in the Imperial City Archives are signed. With the help of a corresponding index, the archivist is able to find the files in case of need. The documents on display in the 34 showcases provide an interesting insight into the important history of the formerly free imperial city.

Guided tours of the Imperial City Archives take place every Tuesday, Thursday and Friday at 11:00 am. The duration is about 30 minutes, the cost is 5 euros per person. On display is a special exhibition with finds that came to light during the renovation work.

As part of the state exhibition "freiheyt 1525 - 500 Jahre Bauernkrieg" from 26.04.2025 to 19.10.2025 , a public guided tour of the old town is offered every 1st Sunday of the month at 11:00 a.m. with a focus on "500 Years of Reformation and Peasants' War". The meeting point for the tour is at the Mühlhausen Tourist Information office at Ratsstraße 20. Please register in advance. The participation fee is €8.00. Every year, the Tourist Information Mühlhausen offers numerous special, thematic guided tours for interested citizens and guests. During these tours, a specific period of the town's history is examined in depth. The topics are very diverse and range from guided tours on the work of special personalities, such as that of Johann Sebastian Bach and the radical reformer Thomas Müntzer in the city, to guided tours on industrial culture, former Jewish life as well as the cemetery and funeral culture. Furthermore, tours in nature are also offered, where you can expand your knowledge about the local herbs. The special tours are planned every year. With the brochure „Adalbert's Buchstabensalat“ (available free of charge at the Tourist Information Mühlhausen) the city can be explored individually. Following the principle of a city rally, questions about various sights have to be answered. With puzzle fun, teamwork and active participation, children and their families get to know the town of Mühlhausen better and work out the solution word step by step. Boredom has no chance on this tour! This offer is suitable for children from 2nd grade to 5th grade. Younger children are also welcome to join in with the family.
