In 1525, the Nuremberg artist Albrecht Dürer drew a design for a monument to the rebellious peasants and citizens defeated in the Peasants' War. The sketch shows a farmer slumped in on himself on a column made of several vessels, harvest gifts and farming tools, piled up perpendicularly on top of each other. The farmer’s head rests on his right arm; a sword has been thrust into his back. This drawing reveals Dürer's direct confrontation with the events of the Peasants’ War. During Dürer's lifetime, the erection of such a monument would have been unthinkable. On the occasion of the  500th anniversary of the Peasants' War and the state exhibition freiheyt 1525 - 500 Jahre Bauernkrieg (Freedom – 500th anniversary of the Peasants' War), the monument was realised in a joint project, thanks also to the donations of numerous citizens of the city of Mühlhausen. Artist Timm Kregel from Gorsleben created the seven-metre-high bronze monument with pedestal. It was unveiled on 5 April 2025 at the Kornmarkt in Mühlhausen.
